Base Overview

A key Pacific Air Forces base in Interior Alaska, home to F-35A fighters, F-16 Aggressors, and the premier RED FLAG-Alaska combat training exercises.
Eielson Air Force Base, strategically positioned in the vast interior of Alaska about 26 miles southeast of Fairbanks, serves as a critical power projection platform for Pacific Air Forces (PACAF). Established during World War II, Eielson AFB has evolved into a premier combat training and readiness center, uniquely adapted to operate in extreme subarctic conditions under the motto “Ready to Go at 50 Below.” Its location provides unparalleled access to the expansive Joint Pacific Alaska Range Complex (JPARC) for realistic training scenarios.

The host unit, the 354th Fighter Wing, maintains combat readiness with two squadrons of F-35A Lightning II fighters, ensuring cutting-edge airpower is available for Indo-Pacific contingencies. The wing also operates the renowned 18th Aggressor Squadron, flying F-16s to provide realistic adversary training for U.S. and allied forces during exercises like RED FLAG-Alaska. Eielson AFB proudly hosts multiple iterations of RED FLAG-Alaska each year, drawing participants from around the globe for large-force combat training exercises.

Eielson shares its flight line with the 168th Wing of the Alaska Air National Guard, which operates KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft, providing essential aerial refueling capabilities critical for supporting operations across the vast distances of the Pacific and Arctic regions. This Total Force Integration enhances the base’s overall mission effectiveness. Military families stationed at Eielson experience the unique lifestyle of Interior Alaska, with opportunities for outdoor adventures and witnessing the spectacular Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights).

Living and working at Eielson AFB presents unique challenges and rewards due to the subarctic climate, characterized by extremely cold winters, short and mild summers, and significant variations in daylight hours. The base and surrounding communities of North Pole and Fairbanks offer robust support, allowing personnel and families to thrive while executing vital missions ensuring regional stability and projecting American airpower in the Arctic and Pacific theaters.
