Hurlburt Field, nestled along the stunning Emerald Coast of Florida near Fort Walton Beach and Mary Esther, serves as the headquarters for Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC) and is a linchpin for U.S. global special operations capabilities. The host unit, the 1st Special Operations Wing (1 SOW), is AFSOC’s busiest and most deployed wing. The 1 SOW operates a diverse fleet of specialized aircraft, including the AC-130J Ghostrider gunship, MC-130H Combat Talon II, CV-22B Osprey tiltrotor, U-28A Draco ISR aircraft, and various Remotely Piloted Aircraft. These platforms enable precision strike, infiltration/exfiltration, specialized mobility, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions in support of special operations forces globally.

Hurlburt Field is the heart of AFSOC, hosting not only the command headquarters but also other key special operations organizations such as the U.S. Air Force Special Operations School (USAFSOS), which provides advanced education and training, and elements of the 24th Special Operations Wing, focused on special tactics. This concentration of SOF expertise fosters a unique environment of innovation and readiness, ensuring Air Commandos are prepared for any contingency.
