A massive, multi-mission base in Albuquerque, NM, vital for nuclear surety, advanced research & development, and specialized aircraft operations and training.
Kirtland Air Force Base, sprawling across a significant portion of southeastern Albuquerque, New Mexico, is a linchpin of national security, encompassing a diverse array of critical missions. As one of the largest installations in Air Force Global Strike Command (for installation support) and a key site for Air Force Materiel Command, Air Education and Training Command, and numerous other organizations, Kirtland AFB plays an indispensable role in nuclear deterrence, advanced research and development, and specialized aircrew training. Its high desert location, adjacent to the Sandia Mountains, provides a unique operational and research environment.

The host unit, the 377th Air Base Wing, provides essential installation support and services for a multitude of vital organizations. Kirtland is home to the headquarters of the Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center (AFNWC), the lead agency for nuclear weapon system surety and sustainment. The Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) also has a major presence with its Directed Energy Directorate and Space Vehicles Directorate, pioneering cutting-edge technologies. Furthermore, the Department of Energy’s Sandia National Laboratories, a federally funded research and development center, is co-located with Kirtland, fostering close collaboration on national security challenges.

In addition to its research and nuclear missions, Kirtland AFB is a major training hub. The 58th Special Operations Wing (AETC) trains aircrews for various special operations and combat search and rescue aircraft, including the CV-22 Osprey, HH-60G Pave Hawk, and HC/MC-130 variants. They are supported by the New Mexico Air National Guard’s 150th Special Operations Wing, an associate unit. The base also hosts the Space Rapid Capabilities Office, focused on delivering timely space-based capabilities.
