Base Overview

Home of the “Gunfighters,” located in the high desert of Idaho, and serving as a premier combat and training wing for the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Mountain Home Air Force Base, located in the high desert of southwestern Idaho, is a vital installation of Air Combat Command (ACC) and home to the legendary 366th Fighter Wing, the “Gunfighters.” With access to vast and unrestricted training ranges, the base is optimally positioned to train and prepare combat-ready airpower for global deployment. The remote location fosters a close-knit community and a singular focus on the fighter mission.

The host unit, the 366th Fighter Wing, is dedicated to providing decisive airpower to combatant commanders worldwide. The wing is comprised of two F-15E Strike Eagle squadrons, the 389th Fighter Squadron “Thunderbolts” and the 391st Fighter Squadron “Bold Tigers.” These squadrons ensure that pilots and weapon systems officers are prepared to execute a full spectrum of combat missions, including air superiority and precision ground attack, in any environment.

A unique and critical aspect of Mountain Home AFB is its strong international partnership with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). The 428th Fighter Squadron, the “Buccaneers,” is a combined U.S. Air Force and RSAF unit dedicated to training Singaporean crews in their own advanced F-15SG aircraft. This enduring partnership enhances interoperability and strengthens ties between the two nations.

Personnel and families stationed at Mountain Home AFB experience a four-season, high desert environment with unparalleled access to outdoor recreation. The base is supported by the nearby city of Mountain Home, while the larger metropolitan area of Boise is about an hour’s drive away. The Gunfighter legacy is built on precision, innovation, and a commitment to excellence, ensuring the 366th Fighter Wing remains a lethal and ready force.
