Base Overview

Known as the “Showplace of the Air Force,” JBSA-Randolph in San Antonio, TX, is the premier training base for U.S. Air Force instructor pilots and home to major AETC and AFPC headquarters.
Joint Base San Antonio – Randolph (JBSA-Randolph), located in Universal City on the northeast side of San Antonio, Texas, is renowned for its historic and architectural significance, earning it the nickname the “Showplace of the Air Force.” A National Historic Landmark, Randolph’s unique design is centered around the iconic “Taj Mahal” (Building 100). Beyond its beauty, the base serves as a critical hub for Air Education and Training Command (AETC), responsible for shaping the Air Force’s flying training enterprise.

The host unit, the 12th Flying Training Wing (12 FTW), is the “Source of America’s Airpower,” executing a highly specialized mission: Pilot Instructor Training (PIT). The 12 FTW is the only wing in the Air Force responsible for training the trainers, producing instructor pilots in the T-6A Texan II, T-38C Talon, and T-1A Jayhawk for the entire service. The wing also conducts Combat Systems Officer (CSO) training and Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) pilot and sensor operator training, making it a cornerstone of AETC’s mission.

Randolph’s strategic importance is further amplified by its role as the headquarters for two major Air Force commands. It hosts the headquarters of Air Education and Training Command, which is responsible for the recruiting, training, and education of all U.S. Air Force personnel. Additionally, it is home to the Air Force Personnel Center (AFPC), the central hub for managing personnel actions and support for Airmen and Guardians worldwide.

Personnel and families stationed at JBSA-Randolph benefit from its location in the thriving San Antonio metropolitan area and its dedicated on-base school district. The base’s professional, academic atmosphere, combined with its rich history and critical training missions, makes it a unique and prestigious assignment. As a key component of Joint Base San Antonio, Randolph continues its legacy of developing the Air Force’s most vital resource: its people.
