Schriever Space Force Base, located approximately 10 miles east of Peterson SFB in Colorado Springs, is a highly secure and specialized installation at the forefront of national security space operations. Unlike traditional air bases, Schriever does not have a flight line; its mission is focused upwards, on operating and defending the nation’s critical satellite constellations. As a key installation under the U.S. Space Force, Schriever is dedicated to executing continuous space warfare operations to protect and defend U.S. and allied interests.

The base is home to numerous Space Force units, known as Deltas, each with a specific focus area. Most notably, Schriever is responsible for the operational control of the Global Positioning System (GPS), the worldwide utility that provides precise positioning, navigation, and timing to billions of users globally. This mission, executed by the 2nd Space Operations Squadron, is a testament to the base’s critical role in both military operations and daily civilian life. Other units, like Space Delta 9, focus on orbital warfare, actively defending U.S. satellites from threats.

Schriever also hosts the Joint Task Force-Space Defense (JTF-SD), a joint organization that works with the National Space Defense Center to unify military and intelligence community efforts for space superiority. The base is supported by the Peterson-Schriever Garrison, which provides installation support services to personnel across multiple locations in the Colorado Springs area, ensuring Guardians and Airmen have what they need to execute their no-fail missions.

A unique aspect of a Schriever assignment is that there is no on-base family housing. All personnel live in the surrounding communities of Colorado Springs, Falcon, or in privatized housing at nearby Peterson SFB. This fosters a deep integration with the local community, while the on-base environment remains highly secure and mission-focused. Schriever SFB truly represents the “high ground” of modern warfare, ensuring American freedom of action in the space domain.
