Grissom Air Reserve Base, strategically located in north-central Indiana between the cities of Peru and Kokomo, serves as a vital hub for Air Force Reserve Command’s (AFRC) global aerial refueling mission. With a rich history evolving from its World War II origins as Bunker Hill Naval Air Station, Grissom ARB plays a crucial role in extending the reach and endurance of U.S. and allied aircraft worldwide. The host unit, the 434th Air Refueling Wing (434 ARW), proudly known as the “Hoosier Wing,” is the largest KC-135R Stratotanker unit in the Air Force Reserve Command. The wing’s mission is to train and equip combat-ready Citizen Airmen to provide strategic aerial refueling and airlift support across the globe. As an Air Reserve Base, Grissom’s operational tempo and on-base population surge during Unit Training Assembly (UTA) weekends, when Traditional Reservists report for duty. The day-to-day operations are managed by a dedicated cadre of Air Reserve Technicians (ARTs), full-time civil service employees who are also Reservists, alongside other civilian personnel and a small number of active duty members. This unique structure ensures continuous mission readiness.
