Laughlin Air Force Base, situated on the U.S.-Mexico border in southwest Texas, approximately six miles east of the city of Del Rio, is a cornerstone of Air Education and Training Command (AETC). Its primary and all-encompassing mission is to produce the world’s best pilots for the U.S. Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, and allied nations. As one of the busiest pilot training bases in the Air Force, Laughlin’s airspace is constantly active with the sights and sounds of training aircraft, earning it a reputation for excellence in forging combat-ready aviators.

The host unit, the 47th Flying Training Wing, executes the demanding Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training (SUPT) mission. Student pilots begin their journey in the T-6A Texan II, mastering basic flight skills before tracking to either the fighter/bomber or tanker/transport pipelines. Students selected for the fighter/bomber track advance to the T-38C Talon for advanced supersonic training, while those destined for larger aircraft learn multi-engine operations in the T-1A Jayhawk. The wing’s dedicated instructor pilots, maintainers, and support personnel are focused on ensuring the highest quality of training.

Life at Laughlin AFB is defined by its fast-paced training environment and its remote, semi-arid location. The base maintains a very close relationship with the city of Del Rio, which provides the sole source of off-base community support. The unique culture of this border region offers a distinct experience for military members and their families.

Despite its remote setting, Laughlin AFB plays a critical and direct role in maintaining the strength of the U.S. Air Force. By producing nearly half of all Air Force pilots annually, the 47th Flying Training Wing’s impact is felt globally, ensuring that skilled aviators are always ready to answer the nation’s call.
