Base Overview

Headquarters of the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command, located in Los Angeles, CA, serving as the center for developing and acquiring military space systems.
Los Angeles Air Force Base, an integral part of the Los Angeles Garrison, is the headquarters of the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC). Located in the city of El Segundo, within the greater Los Angeles metropolitan area, this installation is not a traditional air base with runways and flying missions. Instead, it serves as the primary technical and administrative hub for the Space Force’s acquisition enterprise, responsible for designing, developing, acquiring, and sustaining space-based capabilities for the nation.

The mission at LAAFB is at the forefront of national security space operations. As the home of SSC, the base oversees a vast portfolio of programs, including military satellite communications, navigation systems like the Global Positioning System (GPS), space launch services, and missile warning satellites. The highly specialized workforce consists of military Guardians and Airmen, DoD civilians, and expert contractors, all dedicated to maintaining America’s strategic advantage in the space domain.

A unique aspect of life at LAAFB is its geographically separated structure. The main administrative and work facilities are in El Segundo, while the primary base housing and some support services are located approximately 20 miles south in San Pedro, at the former Fort MacArthur. This arrangement, combined with LA’s notorious traffic, makes commuting a significant consideration for all personnel. The installation operates in close partnership with numerous aerospace industry leaders located throughout Southern California.

Personnel and families stationed at Los Angeles AFB are immersed in one of the most dynamic and culturally diverse metropolitan areas in the world. The assignment presents both the challenges of a very high cost of living and the unparalleled opportunities offered by Southern California, from world-class entertainment and dining to beautiful beaches and outdoor activities. LAAFB remains the critical center for ensuring the U.S. military has the space capabilities needed to deter conflict and protect national interests.
