McConnell Air Force Base, located in the southeastern portion of Wichita, Kansas – the “Air Capital of the World” – is a cornerstone of global mobility and a premier aerial refueling center for the U.S. Air Force. As a “super tanker wing,” McConnell holds the unique distinction of operating both the venerable KC-135 Stratotanker and the next-generation KC-46A Pegasus. The host unit, the 22nd Air Refueling Wing (22 ARW), falls under Air Mobility Command (AMC) and is responsible for providing personnel, aircraft, and equipment to support conventional operations and nuclear deterrence. The wing’s mission is critical for extending the range and endurance of fighters, bombers, and transport aircraft, enabling American airpower to reach any point on the globe. The 22nd ARW works in a seamless Total Force partnership with the Air Force Reserve Command’s 931st Air Refueling Wing, which also flies and maintains both tanker airframes alongside their active-duty counterparts.

In addition to the robust tanker mission, McConnell AFB is also home to the Kansas Air National Guard’s 184th Wing. The 184th Wing has a diverse mission set that includes battlefield command and control, cyber defense, and intelligence operations, adding another layer of strategic importance to the installation. The synergy between the active duty, Reserve, and Guard components makes Team McConnell a powerful and versatile force.
