Base Overview

Everything you need to know about Nellis Air Force Base, known as the “Home of the Fighter Pilot” and one of the Air Force’s most significant installations.
Nellis Air Force Base, located at the northeast edge of Las Vegas, Nevada, is one of the most important Air Force installations in the United States. The base occupies more than 14,000 acres and serves as a focal point for advanced combat aviation training.

Nellis is home to the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center, which includes the USAF Weapons School, the Thunderbirds demonstration team, and the world-renowned Red Flag and Green Flag exercises. The base is named after 1st Lt. William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas native who was killed in action during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II.

The base’s proximity to Las Vegas offers military personnel and their families access to world-class entertainment, dining, and recreational opportunities, while still providing the benefits of a tight-knit military community.

The Nevada Test and Training Range, which is operated by Nellis AFB, provides 5,000 square miles of restricted airspace for military training exercises, making it the largest contiguous air and ground space available for military operations in the free world.
